THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES

(Thursdays)

Moving on from the infancy and the hidden life in Nazareth to the public life of Jesus, our contemplation brings us to those mysteries which may be called in a special way “mysteries of light".

Certainly the whole mystery of Christ is a mystery of light. He is the “light of the world" (Jn 8:12).

Yet this truth emerges in a special way during the years of his public life, when he proclaims the Gospel of the Kingdom.

Each of these mysteries is a revelation of the Kingdom now present in the very person of Jesus.

The sign of the Cross:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Apostle's Creed:

I believe in God,

the Father Almighty,

Creator of Heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ,

His only Son Our Lord,

Who was conceived

by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died,

and was buried.

He descended into Hell;

the third day He rose again

from the dead;

He ascended into Heaven,

and sitteth at the right hand of God,

the Father almighty;

from thence He shall come

to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body and

life everlasting.

Amen.

Then say

1 Our Father,

Our Father,

Who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come.

Thy Will be done,

on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Marys - three times

(for the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity)

Hail Mary, full of grace,

the Lord is with thee;

Blessed art thou among women,

and blessed is the fruit

of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

1 Glory Be

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning,

is now, and ever shall be,

world without end.

Amen.

1. The Baptism at the Jordan

Matthew 3:1-17

 Our Father

1 In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea

2 (and) saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

Hail Mary

3 It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: "A voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.'"

Hail Mary

5 At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him

6 and were being baptised by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins.

Hail Mary

7 When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8 Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.

Hail Mary

11 I am baptising you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire.

Hail Mary

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptised by him.

Hail Mary

14 John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to be baptised by you, and yet you are coming to me?"

Hail Mary

15 Jesus said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.

Hail Mary

16 After Jesus was baptised, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him.

Hail Mary

17 And a voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

2. The Wedding Feast at Cana

John 2:1-11

 Our Father

1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

Hail Mary

2 Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.

Hail Mary

3 When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."

Hail Mary

4 (And) Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come."

Hail Mary

5 His mother said to the servers, "Do whatever he tells you."

Hail Mary

6 Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons.

Hail Mary

7 Jesus told them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim.

Hail Mary

8 Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it.

Hail Mary

9 And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom

10 and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now."

Hail Mary

11 Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

3. The Proclaimation of the Kingdom

Matthew 10:5-20

 Our Father

5 Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, "Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town.

Hail Mary

6 Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Hail Mary

7 As you go, make this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'

Hail Mary

8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.

Hail Mary

9 Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;

10 no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The labourer deserves his keep.

Hail Mary

11 Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave.

12 As you enter a house, wish it peace.

Hail Mary

13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you.

Hail Mary

14 Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words - go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.

15 Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

Hail Mary

17 But beware of people, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues,

Hail Mary

20 For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

4. The Transfiguration

Matthew 17:1-13

 Our Father

1 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

Hail Mary

2 And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.

Hail Mary

3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him.

4 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

Hail Mary

5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,

6 then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."

Hail Mary

6 When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid.

7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and do not be afraid."

Hail Mary

8 And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone.

Hail Mary

9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, "Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

Hail Mary

10 Then the disciples asked him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

11 He said in reply, "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;

Hail Mary

12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognise him but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands."

Hail Mary

13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

5. The Institution of the Eucharist

Luke 22:7-8:13-20.

 Our Father

7 When the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread arrived, the day for sacrificing the Passover lamb,

Hail Mary

8 he sent out Peter and John, instructing them, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."

Hail Mary

13 Then they went off and found everything exactly as he had told them, and there they prepared the Passover.

Hail Mary

14 When the hour came, he took his place at table with the apostles.

Hail Mary

15 He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,

Hail Mary

16 for, I tell you, I shall not eat it (again) until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God."

Hail Mary

17 Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves;

Hail Mary

18 for I tell you (that) from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."

Hail Mary

19 Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me."

Hail Mary

20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

Concluding Prayers

Salve Regina

(Hail Holy Queen)

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

(Verse)

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

(Response)

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray,

O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Prayer to St Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in the hour of conflict, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God restrain him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust satan down to hell and with him all wicked spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.

May the Divine Assistance

always remain with us

and may the souls

of the faithful departed,

Through the mercy of God

rest in Peace.

Amen

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
