THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES

(Tuesdays and Fridays, may be said on Sundays during Lent )

In the Sorrowful Mysteries we stand beneath the Cross of Jesus, coming face to face with the truth of his insistence that the Christ must suffer and die.

No matter that we long to cry out, if only we had been there; we still encounter the reality of our human position and the truth that is Our Lord's.

We sense the sword piercing the heart of his Mother, and pray that it may open our whole being to the agony and the power that the infinite love of Jesus in his Passion chose and endured for us

The sign of the Cross:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Apostle's Creed:

I believe in God,

the Father Almighty,

Creator of Heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ,

His only Son Our Lord,

Who was conceived

by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died,

and was buried.

He descended into Hell;

the third day He rose again

from the dead;

He ascended into Heaven,

and sitteth at the right hand of God,

the Father almighty;

from thence He shall come

to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body and

life everlasting.

Amen.

Then say

1 Our Father,

Our Father,

Who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come.

Thy Will be done,

on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Marys - three times

(for the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity)

Hail Mary, full of grace,

the Lord is with thee;

Blessed art thou among women,

and blessed is the fruit

of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

1 Glory Be

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning,

is now, and ever shall be,

world without end.

Amen.

1. The Agony in the Garden

Matthew 26:36-49:57

 Our Father

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."

Hail Mary

37 He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress.

38 Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me."

Hail Mary

39 He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will."

Hail Mary

40 When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?

41 Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Hail Mary

42 Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, "My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!"

Hail Mary

43 Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open.

44 He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again.

Hail Mary

45 Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners.

Hail Mary

46 Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand."

47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd, with swords and clubs, who had come from the chief priests and the elders of the people.

Hail Mary

48 His betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying, "The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him."

49 Immediately he went over to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and he kissed him.

Hail Mary

57 Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

2. The Scourging at the Pillar

John 18:28-40 19:1

 Our Father

28 Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was morning. And they themselves did not enter the praetorium, in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the Passover.

Hail Mary

29 So Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring (against) this man?"

30 They answered and said to him, "If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you."

Hail Mary

31 At this, Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." The Jews answered him, "We do not have the right to execute anyone,"

Hail Mary

32 in order that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled that he said indicating the kind of death he would die.

Hail Mary

33 So Pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"

34 Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?"

Hail Mary

35 Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?"

36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants (would) be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here."

Hail Mary

37 So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

Hail Mary

38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them, "I find no guilt in him.

Hail Mary

39 But you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"

40 They cried out again, "Not this one but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.

Hail Mary

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged.

3. The Crowning with Thorns

Matthew 27:22-31

 Our Father

22 Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!"

Hail Mary

23 But he said, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Let him be crucified!"

Hail Mary

24 When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Look to it yourselves."

Hail Mary

25 And the whole people said in reply, "His blood be upon us and upon our children."

Hail Mary

26 Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified.

Hail Mary

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around him.

Hail Mary

28 They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him.

Hail Mary

29 Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

Hail Mary

30 They spat upon him and took the reed and kept striking him on the head.

Hail Mary

31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him off to crucify him.

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

4. The Carrying of the Cross

Luke 23:24-33

 Our Father

24 The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted.

Hail Mary

25 So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished.

Hail Mary

26 As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.

Hail Mary

27 A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.

Hail Mary

28 Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,

Hail Mary

29 for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.

Hail Mary

30 At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'

Hail Mary

31 for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"

Hail Mary

32 Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed.

Hail Mary

33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus

Luke 23:33-47

 Our Father

33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.

Hail Mary

34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."  They divided his garments by casting lots.

Hail Mary

35 The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Messiah of God."

Hail Mary

36 Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine

37 they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."

Hail Mary

38 Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews."

Hail Mary

39 Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."

40 The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation?

41 And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal."

Hail Mary

42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

43 He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

Hail Mary

44 It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon

45 because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.

Hail Mary

46 Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last.

Hail Mary

47 The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, "This man was innocent beyond doubt."

Hail Mary

Glory Be to the Father

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

Concluding Prayers

Salve Regina

(Hail Holy Queen)

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

(Verse)

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

(Response)

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray,

O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,

have mercy on us.

Immaculate Heart of Mary,

pray for us.

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Prayer to St Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in the hour of conflict, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God restrain him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust satan down to hell and with him all wicked spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.

May the Divine Assistance

always remain with us

and may the souls

of the faithful departed,

Through the mercy of God

rest in Peace.

Amen

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
